High-Frequency Spinal Cord Stimulation
Pain Management Specialists were the first in Maryland to offer high-frequency spinal cord stimulation and dorsal root ganglion stimulation for neuropathic pain. Nevro is the developer of the recently FDA-approved Senza (trademarked) spinal cord stimulator system, which uses “HF-10” (trademarked) stimulation. When compared to traditional (low frequency) stimulation, HF-10 stimulation is proven 50-90% more effective for the control of chronic back and leg pain. Another advantage is that HF-10 therapy does not produce potentially bothersome tingling sensations during use. While traditional spinal cord stimulation has been an invaluable tool in our pain treatment armamentarium for decades, it only helps about 50% of selected patients. By contrast, clinical trials show that almost 80% of patients implanted with the Senza system respond to treatment. This will dramatically improve outcomes in this notoriously difficult-to-treat patient population, and reduce the need for repeat back surgeries and powerful morphine-like pain medications.
